Solar Warranties: Who Covers What?

Understand solar equipment, workmanship and service coverage. Build a homeowner warranty map, compare exclusions and identify who handles each problem.

Questions homeowners ask

Does a long panel warranty cover my whole solar system?

Do not assume it does. Build a coverage map with separate rows for panels, inverters, batteries, installation work, roof penetrations and any production commitment. For each row, ask for the document that creates the obligation, the responsible legal entity and the stated remedy. An advertised number of years is not a complete coverage description.

What should I check in the written warranty?

Read the duration, covered faults, exclusions, remedy and claim procedure. Ask whether labor and shipping are included and whether registration is required. Save the warranty and purchase receipt, and get spoken repair promises in writing. The FTC explains why these details matter.

How do equipment, workmanship and performance promises differ?

Use these as questions to put to the provider: which document addresses a faulty component, which addresses installation work, and which—if any—commits to a defined energy result? Request the measurement basis and remedy for each. Do not assume one promise fills gaps in another or that a production commitment guarantees a particular utility bill.

Is a paid service plan the same as the included warranty?

A separately sold service contract differs from a warranty that accompanies a product. Compare the covered tasks and periods before paying for additional coverage. The FTC notes that coverage can overlap. Ask the seller to explain the extra benefit in writing.

Who pays to find and replace a failed component?

Ask for a written breakdown: investigation, replacement part, shipping, travel, removal, installation and any roof access work. Mark each item covered, excluded or unresolved, with the supporting clause. This is a comparison worksheet, not a statement that every warranty includes or excludes these costs.

What should I ask if I have a lease or PPA?

Find the system owner and service contact in the agreement. Ask who opens equipment claims, authorizes work and pays charges outside included service. Request the reporting procedure and escalation route. Resolve those responsibilities with the owner before commissioning changes; the contract should guide the next step.

What if the installer is no longer available?

Identify the panel and inverter manufacturers and gather warranty paperwork. DOE recommends identifying equipment makers and asking qualified local installers whether they can inspect the specific equipment when the original installer is gone. A new provider’s investigation price and any manufacturer remedy still need confirmation.

Will coverage transfer when I sell the house?

Ask each warranty provider for its actual transfer rules, required documents, fees if any and deadlines. Get written confirmation rather than assuming that a property sale transfers every promise. Coordinate this separately from any loan payoff, lease transfer or PPA assumption. Use the solar-home transaction guide to organize the broader handover.

How should I document an unresolved service request?

Create a dated record of the reported issue, support case number, provider response, promised next step and agreed costs. Keep originals and send copies when requested. The FTC suggests contacting the seller and then the manufacturer if the seller does not resolve a product problem. For disputed rights, obtain advice specific to your state and agreement.

Can a third-party assessment decide my warranty claim?

A scoped assessment can document observations and identify unanswered technical questions. Ask the provider what evidence it can collect and what it cannot determine. Coverage decisions and contract disputes remain separate from an observation report. Solar Survey AI does not promise warranty acceptance, free repairs or a manufacturer-authorized diagnosis through this guide.

How do I escalate a service problem clearly?

The FTC recommends collecting the contract and related records, describing the problem and requested resolution, and keeping a copy of your complaint and communications. If the business does not resolve it, consider your state attorney general or consumer protection office. Reporting to the FTC can help identify patterns; the FTC does not resolve individual complaints. Ask a qualified legal adviser about contract-specific rights or deadlines.

Does a nonworking system automatically cancel my solar loan?

Do not assume it does. The CFPB’s solar-financing report notes that some agreements make payment obligations independent of system performance. Review the actual loan and installation contracts with the lender or servicer and a qualified adviser. Document the equipment problem and the billing dispute separately. This guide does not direct you to stop payments or determine your legal remedies.

Where can I raise a problem with the financing company?

The CFPB accepts complaints about financial products and services, including personal installment loans. Its current complaint page explains which products are supported and what records to include. Describe the dates, amounts, company and requested resolution, with supporting documents. Use the official channel yourself; Solar Survey AI does not submit a complaint for you or guarantee a refund, repair or debt cancellation.

Your decision checklist

  • Collect the actual documents, version dates, receipts and equipment identifiers.
  • List the responsible legal entity and service contact for each coverage category.
  • Record start and end conditions rather than only the advertised term.
  • Separate parts, labor, access, shipping and investigation costs.
  • Ask for exclusions, required maintenance and claim instructions.
  • Confirm ownership, transfer rules and any separate service plan.
  • Keep a dated support log and unresolved questions.

Turn a warranty headline into a coverage map

Original comparison worksheet; fill it from your actual documents.
Coverage questionRecord before signing
Which promise applies?Document title, provider and covered event
What is the remedy?Repair, replacement or other stated response
What might I pay?Investigation, labor, access and delivery terms
How do I request service?Contact, evidence requirements and next step

Example only: a proposal advertises a long panel warranty, but the homeowner cannot find who pays to remove and reinstall a failed panel. Keep that expense unresolved until the responsible provider supplies the applicable term. Do not treat the headline duration as an answer.

Example only: a homeowner with a leased system receives a quote for work from a separate contractor. First ask the system owner how service is authorized and which costs the agreement covers. The quote alone does not establish the owner’s approval or reimbursement obligation.

For a current system problem, start with the safe next-step guide. For a transaction, use the solar-home handover guide. Learn how Solar Survey AI documents site evidence and ask about a defined inspection scope; confirm homeowner availability, qualifications and limitations before booking.
