Questions homeowners ask

What do kWh and KWN mean on an OPPD net meter bill?

OPPD labels energy entering from its grid as kWh and energy sent back as KWN. Its sample bill uses a negative sign for exports. Keep the bill period and signs with each reading.

Does Total Net show everything my panels produced?

No. OPPD explains that its meter measures exchanges with the grid, while a solar production meter measures system generation. Electricity used inside the home before export explains part of the difference.

What bill fields help reconcile a monitoring report?

OPPD identifies the rate, billing dates, meter number, readings and multiplier in its bill guide. Match these fields before comparing data.

Does a net export mean there can be no remaining bill?

OPPD describes a monthly service charge independent of energy usage and a separate net-metering credit. Keep charges and credits separate; confirm the applicable rate with the utility.

Can I keep OPPD Level Payment with net metering?

OPPD says Level Payment is unavailable for net-metering customers. Confirm the account change before relying on a fixed monthly payment.

What should I request when buying an OPPD solar home?

OPPD says a new property owner must sign an interconnection agreement and that it contacts the owner for a signature. Request the current process directly.

Which record distinguishes completed testing from authorization to operate?

The linked January 2025 manual describes commissioning-results review and an OPPD permission-to-operate letter contingent on successful tests. Request the applicable approval records rather than treating a portal screenshot as permission.

Source: OPPD: interconnection manual, revision 6.0 January 2025. Reviewed 2026-10-06.

Is an interconnection agreement also my export-payment agreement?

The manual explicitly separates interconnection from an agreement for energy transactions. Keep operating permission and compensation documents together, but review them as separate records.

How can I investigate a disagreement without sharing a password?

Prepare redacted bill pages and an authorized production-data export for matching dates. Hide account identifiers before sharing publicly. Ask the utility about bill readings and a qualified service provider about equipment data. Solar Survey AI education helps organize the questions; homeowner monitoring and remote diagnosis remain coming soon.

When can an independent assessment help?

An assessment can help organize observations, photographs and scope questions where the concern involves site or equipment condition. Ask about qualifications, commercial relationships and what the review excludes. Third-party status alone does not establish independence, and an assessment cannot decide utility billing, legal rights or approval.

Your decision checklist

  • Confirm the property is served by OPPD and identify the applicable rate.
  • Retain billing start/end dates, import and export labels and units.
  • Compare utility grid exchange with production for matching dates.
  • Keep service charges and compensation records separate.
  • Confirm payment-plan changes directly with OPPD.
  • Retain the signed agreement and final permission-to-operate letter.
  • Ask OPPD about new-owner requirements before relying on seller access.
  • Redact private account details before sharing a records packet.

Illustrative arithmetic: a matching-period record shows 600 kWh imported and 200 kWh exported. Their net difference is 400 kWh. These invented quantities do not calculate a dollar bill, establish a tariff or describe a customer. Preserve the original direction labels and ask how the applicable schedule and separate charges produce the final amount.

Example: a buyer receives a working solar dashboard but no utility approval packet. Request the actual agreement, final operating notice and current new-owner process. Provider access, utility permission and the sale contract answer different questions. A technical assessment can document observations within its agreed scope; it cannot transfer rights or issue utility permission.

This guide concerns OPPD accounts, not every Nebraska utility or every Omaha address. The utility’s currently linked manual is revision 6.0 January 2025 and asks owners to confirm the current version. The public rate directory links a rate manual whose cover is marked draft; we therefore do not quote current prices, decide tariff applicability or promise an export payment. Obtain the controlling account schedule and written utility explanation. Our worksheet and examples are editorial record-review aids, not utility forms or approval. Do not open meter equipment or conduct electrical tests. A battery’s presence alone does not establish outage backup capability. Continue with bill measurement checks, approval milestones and solar home-sale records. Learn Solar Survey AI’s evidence methodology and confirm available survey scope. Homeowner provider connections and planned free remote diagnosis remain coming soon.
