Questions homeowners ask
Is rated round-trip efficiency my household’s daily result?
Enphase distinguishes controlled test efficiency from everyday operation. Its IQ Battery 5P example describes changing power levels and idle energy. A specification is not a promise that every daily chart will show the same ratio.

Why does the measurement boundary matter?
The white paper distinguishes energy measured at AC battery terminals from DC battery measurements. Compare equivalent boundaries; a battery-cell figure and an app energy total are not automatically interchangeable.

Can a battery use energy while it is idle?
Enphase explains that battery operation includes energy for internal maintenance even when it is not actively charging or discharging. Keep idle time and measurement scope in the comparison.

Do operating profiles affect the context of a comparison?
Enphase discusses Full Backup, Self-Consumption, Savings and reserve choices alongside efficiency. Record the actual profile and purpose before comparing periods. This guide does not prescribe a reserve setting or promise outage runtime.

Is discharged energy divided by charged energy always a complete test?
Use that division only as a clearly labeled descriptive ratio of the recorded totals. If stored energy differs at the period boundaries, energy charged earlier may be discharged now, or newly charged energy may remain stored. The ratio alone does not reconcile that difference.
What should I retain before asking about a low ratio?
Keep the period, units, battery model, profile, reserve, beginning and ending state of charge, charge and discharge totals, reporting gaps and displayed status. Ask the authorized provider to confirm measurement scope and completeness. Leave missing data unknown rather than filling it with zero.
Does a low chart ratio prove a battery fault?
It is a question to investigate, not a diagnosis. Request a written explanation of the data, configuration, assumptions and unresolved alternatives. A records review cannot replace equipment-specific support or a qualified physical investigation. Do not force a charge/discharge cycle to recreate a specification test.
Your decision checklist
- Identify the installed model and applicable manufacturer documentation.
- Use matching periods, units and measurement boundaries.
- Keep the actual profile, reserve and charge state at both boundaries.
- Record charge, discharge, gaps and relevant status messages.
- Separate a chart ratio from an efficiency certification or fault diagnosis.
- Ask authorized support for written findings before approving paid work.
- Keep account identifiers and private app screens out of public posts.

Read energy totals in context
| Record | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Equipment and document | Installed battery model, applicable document version and provider confirmation |
| Time boundary | Start, end, timezone, reporting gaps and comparable period |
| Measurement boundary | AC/DC scope, units and what each chart includes |
| Stored energy context | Beginning/ending state of charge and any unknown boundary reading |
| Operating context | Actual profile, reserve, event history and reported changes |
| Energy totals | Original charge/discharge totals and clearly labeled descriptive ratio |
| Support outcome | Written explanation, unresolved question, authorized next action and fee scope |
Fictional arithmetic: one complete chart period reports 10 kWh charged and 9 kWh discharged. Dividing 9 by 10 gives a descriptive ratio of 90%. That arithmetic identifies the relationship between these invented totals. It does not establish the household’s round-trip efficiency, test conditions, warranty compliance, savings or battery health. Keep the original period and measurement definitions beside the calculation.
Fictional example: two days show different charge/discharge ratios. On the second day, the owner cannot find the beginning charge state and the chart includes a reporting gap. The owner marks those fields unknown, retains the original records and asks support whether the periods are comparable. The owner does not replace the missing interval with zero or force the equipment through a new cycle.
Start with the question you need answered: a bill comparison, a missing-data problem, a performance concern or an outage-planning question. Each needs different evidence. A calculation is easier to interpret when its period, measurement boundary and missing inputs are visible. Keep estimated values distinct from readings and a provider’s explanation distinct from an unresolved suspicion.
Reviewed October 7, 2026 against Enphase’s HTML white paper WHP-00032 v1.0, dated October 7, 2025. It focuses on IQ Battery 5P and discusses operating profiles and reserve context. Manufacturer guidance is not an independent comparative certification, a legal requirement or a guarantee for every battery generation. Ask the manufacturer or authorized provider which current instructions apply to your actual equipment. The worksheet, arithmetic and scenarios are original editorial planning aids.
Use records already available through your authorized account or provider. Do not open equipment, measure live terminals, bypass protections, disconnect the grid or change a profile solely to complete this organizer. Follow equipment-specific support instructions. If the system reports a safety concern, obtain qualified help; this page supplies no repair or electrical testing procedure.
Continue with Enphase maintainer and data-access roles, Sunlight Backup configuration limits, battery participation and control agreements and system-problem records. Energy accounting, backed-up circuits, event participation and equipment service are separate questions.
