Tesla Powerwall.
Read the whole backup plan.

Compare stored energy, configured output and the actual backed-up loads.

Three parts of the proposal
  1. kWhStored energy
  2. kWConfigured output
  3. LoadsBackup scope

Original planning illustration. No product testing.

Tesla Powerwall is a home battery system. Before comparing a proposal, separate stored energy, configured output power and the loads included in the backup design. A large number in one column cannot answer the other two questions.

This is an independent educational guide from Solar Survey AI, a survey-services company. We do not sell Powerwall through this page, provide official Tesla account support or report hands-on product tests. For the manufacturer’s product and ordering journey, use Tesla’s official Powerwall page.

Three separate decisions

What does Powerwall do?

Tesla describes Powerwall as storing energy for later use, with monitoring and controls through its app. Its U.S. explanation of how Powerwall works is the starting point for the product family. Match that general explanation to the actual model and proposed system.

A useful first conversation is concrete: “Which loads do we want during an outage, how long do they run, and which ones overlap?” Ask the designer to turn those goals into an equipment and circuit plan. Keep a backup goal separate from a bill-saving scenario and its tariff assumptions.

Read the exact U.S. Powerwall 3 specification

Checked October 16, 2026 against Tesla’s U.S. Powerwall 3 manual with Gateway 3. These are manufacturer specifications, not our measurements. Confirm the current document and configuration for your project.

Selected manufacturer specifications — read each quantity in its own units
QuantityPublished U.S. valueWhat to verify in a proposal
Nominal battery energy13.5 kWhThe energy assumption available for the intended use and reserve.
Nominal AC output power5.8, 7.6, 10 or 11.5 kW configurationsThe actual configured output; do not assume every installation uses the largest value.
Grid specification120/240 V AC, split phase, 60 HzThe applicable regional product and professional design.

The manual qualifies its nominal-energy value at 25°C, beginning of life and 3.3 kW charge/discharge power. It also describes a higher off-grid output under additional configuration and installation conditions. That conditional figure is not substituted for the nominal AC ratings here.

When two proposals use the same product name, ask each provider to identify the rating actually used in the design. Keep continuous operation, starting demand and energy over time in separate rows; an equipment headline alone does not establish a household’s operating plan.

A Powerwall 3 Expansion is a different component

Tesla’s U.S. Expansion specification lists 13.5 kWh nominal battery energy and compatibility with Powerwall 3 only. Confirm exactly which base units and Expansion units are in the offer; the names are not interchangeable.

One arithmetic distinction

Energy addition does not establish a new power rating

One listed 13.5 kWh energy quantity plus another is 27 kWh by addition. That sum alone does not establish the configured AC output, available output energy, runtime or an approved installation. Ask for a complete equipment schedule and operating scenario rather than inferring those answers from the total.

For an expansion proposal, request the existing-system identity, proposed components, compatibility evidence, commissioning scope and any changed operating limitations. A component’s availability on a manufacturer page does not establish stock, lead time or eligibility at your address.

Compare a complete Powerwall proposal

Use the same household goals for each offer. The record below is our original comparison framework; it does not select equipment or approve a design. Mark missing information as unresolved and request the evidence in writing.

Proposal record — complete a separate copy for each provider
RecordAsk the provider to identifyEvidence to retain
EquipmentExact model, region, base-unit and Expansion quantities.Equipment schedule and applicable document revision.
Backup scopeCovered circuits, excluded loads and intended overlap scenario.Project design and written operating explanation.
Power and energyConfigured ratings, reserve assumptions and relevant load evidence.Calculation inputs and unresolved starting-load questions.
Solar relationshipExisting or proposed PV, inverter arrangement and supported charging behavior.Compatibility explanation for the complete system.
Installed workLocation, access, electrical changes, approvals and commissioning.Included work, exclusions and responsibility for corrections.
Price and termsComplete installed price, ownership and any separate obligations.Written offer and actual agreements; verify incentives separately.
HandoverApp access, support contact, operating instructions and warranty documents.Owner handover pack and named follow-up responsibility.

Example: two offers show the same nominal energy total, but only one names the configured output and backed-up circuits. The missing information is a follow-up question, not evidence that the other offer is equivalent or inferior. Resolve the scope before comparing the price.

For a broader project, use the home solar system guide, roof, shade and battery questions and permit and utility approval guide. For portable, individually connected devices, the solar-generator device planner illustrates energy and overlapping loads; it does not design a Powerwall installation.

Already own Powerwall?

Use the resource that matches the actual issue. These guides serve different tasks from comparing a new battery proposal.

Keep account details, serial numbers and project records private. Solar Survey AI cannot confirm a unit’s account status, installation configuration or service eligibility from this general guide.

Powerwall planning questions

Is Powerwall a solar panel?

Powerwall is a home battery system. Keep the battery, solar-generating equipment and complete installation design distinct when reviewing a proposal.

Does every Powerwall 3 installation have an 11.5 kW output rating?

The reviewed U.S. manual lists several nominal AC output configurations. Ask for the actual configured rating and applicable operating conditions for the proposed installation.

Is Powerwall 3 Expansion the same as another Powerwall 3?

No. The reviewed Expansion specification describes a separate component compatible with Powerwall 3. Confirm exact components, quantities and the complete system design.

How long will Powerwall run my home?

A nominal energy number does not establish household runtime. The available energy, reserve, connected loads, operating conditions and charging scenario need a project-specific explanation.

Does Solar Survey AI sell Powerwall or provide official Tesla support?

This page is independent education from a survey-services company. It does not sell Powerwall, provide official Tesla account support or report hands-on product testing. Follow the linked Tesla resources for the manufacturer journey.
